I’m 40!

The Oregon DriveWell I have reached the big 4-0. About a week ago my wife and I decided to go to Oregon to be with my in-laws to wait out the Corona Virus. My in-laws are devout Mormons and within the Mormon church they teach that you should have a food supply of one year just-in-case. That, mixed with my Father-in-laws many guns made their house the best destination to wait out Covid-19. So we packed our kids and headed for our 12 hour drive. We’ve made the drive many times before but this time I noticed that all we saw were big rig trucks on the road. Luckily for us we saw absolutely no traffic on our way up here.

One thing about California is that there were still a ton of cars on the road. It didn’t appear as though everyone was taking the stay-at-home order seriously. Even though they ordered Restaurants to close I still saw people eating inside of a Sizzler.

One week ago I was Furloughed for 60 days which is fancy talk for not being laid off but not getting paid. I applied for unemployment and I’m still waiting to see if I was approved or denied. Luckily Trump just signed a 2 Trillion dollar stimulus package which gives us $600 on top of our unemployment along with a $3,400 check as well. The downside of the stimulus package is that I need to keep my finances the same. Because if I make more next year I will have to pay some of that money back. When I first got furloughed I was franticly looking for jobs and have decided to just wait it out. Not only because of keeping my pay the same, but because I’ve noticed that companies are taking advantage of lack of jobs and offering close to nothing for pay. One job for a software engineer said the pay was $12 an hour.

OregonOne thing I’ve learned from Covid-19 is that we should have listened to our in-laws about being prepared in case of a crisis which we weren’t. While we live in uncertain times I’m glad I’m here in Oregon – healthy with my family.

I’m taking this time to brush up on my skills and get my Github account setup. I’m looking closer into Tailwind CSS and getting up to speed with Laravel 7. I’m also planning on brushing up on my Vue skills and maybe even a little React and Flutter while I’m at it.

My wife asked me do I feel 40 this morning. To be honest, I don’t feel any different except for the fact that I’ve started to go bald. The fact that it took 40 years to start going bald is kinda amazing. There is not a single man in my family on both sides that hasn’t started going bald a lot earlier.

I’m trying to stay positive about all this but I’d be a liar if the uncertainty of the country regarding the Corona virus hasn’t scared me half to death.
