I get asked why Las Vegas? When most non-Vegas locals think about Las Vegas they think about the strip and automatically think all of Las Vegas is like that, but in truth it’s not. We first learned about this years ago while my daughter was playing at a softball tournament in Las Vegas. One of the coaches (Francisco Rest In Peace) invited us to his sisters house for Carne Asada tacos. His sister had a beautiful two story home in a very nice neighborhood. When I learned what they paid in rent (which was half what we paid in California for double the house) my Google fu skills went into action. I learned what I could buy vs California and immediately put Las Vegas on the places to move to.
When I first decided California Wasn’t the place for my family
90’s and early 2000 California was great. I was skateboarding, going to punk rock shows, in a band and living the life. When my wife and I started dating California was fun. The people were down-to-earth and it seemed there was so much opportunity. Then the recession hit. I was a victim of the .com bust but there was still an abundance of jobs… let me say good companies to work for. What I saw post recession is the absence of perks, like bonuses and free coffee but I also noticed people in general were not happy at all.
It felt like we were all grasping at straws for a small piece of the pie. Jobs required more of us while paying us less or the same.
See I lived in the Inland Empire. When people ask me where I’m from I have to go through a long spiel of how the Inland Empire is not the greatest part of California. When you lived in the Inland Empire working in Orange County was an option if you were willing to live through a horrible commute.
What I noticed is the abundance of good paying Orange County jobs were going away. Why? I believe regulations and the cost of doing business was forcing businesses to live out of California.
We had bad luck in California. I would get money for a side gig and all of a sudden my car would break down. Stuff like this happened frequently. It was like we couldn’t catch a break. No matter how long/hard I worked we were living paycheck to paycheck.
2 more very personal things happened that I cannot put online due to the severity but in a nutshell these were the icing on the cake. We had to get out.
