If you haven’t heard of the Steam Deck. It’s basically a gaming PC that runs Linux and the SteamOS. Steam is a PC gaming store that I’ve used for over 11 years. You can check out my gamer tag if you want to be friends and play games. I pre-ordered the Steam Deck over a year ago because I was sick of the lack of AAA games on the Nintendo Switch. I tend to play games before I go to bed or on the weekends if time permits and love to use handhelds because they give me the ability to game anywhere I want vs. being stuck at my desk. Luckily, my kids are older now and I have a lot more free time than I used to.
I’ve had the Steam Deck for almost a week now and it’s definitely a gaming PC, bugs and all but totally worth it. So far I’ve played Elden Ring, Final Fantasy 7 remake, and a ton of indies. I’ve had to tweak the settings in all of those games to get the maximum I can, while having the most battery life that I can get. If you don’t know me I love to tinker. Cars, computers and home improvement stuff are my jam. So having a gaming PC where I can tweak the settings to my hearts desire is a huge plus for me.
Who is the Steam Deck for?
I get asked this question a ton. The Steam Deck is a gaming PC and not a console. While some games might work with zero tweaking from what I’ve seen, that’s not always the case. Consoles you just plug in and play. Devices like the Steam Deck you might have minor bugs or glitches that you will need to research. You will also need to have a Steam account to buy one. Without a Steam account you’ll need to buy it off a scalper for a super high price. I’ve seen Steam Decks going for 3 times the price on Ebay.
If you’re a PC gamer that buys games on Steam and likes to tinker I highly recommend the Steam Deck. It’s by far my most loved device since the iPad.
